Geoff's Review
As you approach the seaside resort town of Whitianga, a billboard proclaims "The World's Best Beach Frontages", which seems a little bold for those familiar with the French Riviera or Malibu. With a summer influx which swells the permanent population of 6800 to over 35,000, the Mercury Twin (est 2002) provides a year-round programme of mainstream and art house titles. Summer and holiday weekends are the busy period; in the quieter months it services both Whitianga locals and tourists, as well as the nearby settlements of Cooks Beach, Tairua and Coromandel.
A trip to the Mercury Twin is made a little bit special, if you are staying north of the town, by taking the passenger ferry across the lovely harbour ($5 return) and a short stroll across town. Good concession prices for students and senior citizens.
Not a fancy cinema but comfortable and warm, and a very good option on a rainy night on the Coromandel.
