Geoff's Review
Heading south on SH1, turn off at Exit 458 and after a short drive, you will come across the Hawkin's Theatre on Ray Small Drive, adjacent to the Papakura Central school. It is a large, Tuscony-influenced, multi-function community centre serving approximately 50,000 citizens in this southern suburb of Auckland.
Built by the Papakura Council before it was absorbed into the Auckland super-city, this resource is well supported by the local community. The Hawkin's Theatre features twice-weekly film screenings, with an emphasis on art house and New Zealand titles, usually on week-day nights. Multiplex cinemas in neighbouring Pukekohe, Botany Downs and Manukau serve the mainstream audience but the Hawkin's Theatre offers cheaper ticket prices, with tickets bought in advance only $8 for adults and $6 for students and children. It is also a more interesting environment than your run-of-the-mill multiplex--take note of the foyer, with its art works on the walls and shiny rimu floors.
The Hawkins sometimes hosts special events of particular interest to teachers a nd film-buffs eg in September 2014 it featured a "meetwith cast and crew" of the excellent NZ film 'The Dark Horse'.
