Geoff's Review
The Gecko describes itself as "Motueka's Independent Cinema", in this town situated in a major fruit-growing and holiday region of the South Island (they used to grow tobacco there too). It moved from the main street to a site on a side street three years ago (it takes a little searching to find it), to a modest building which prides itself on its rustic charm. For those not in the know, the 'gecko' refers to a native lizard, and it is a theme continued in the cinema--included in prescreening slides of local wildlife and tourist attractions.
Screens art house titles, with 4-6 daily screenings across two small screens. You may also get a personal introduction to the film.
I saw Lars Von Trier's "Melancholia" there in late December 2011--a film which would have been memorable no matter where I had seen it first!
The Gecko is run by a group of local shareholders. Ticket prices are very reasonable (Thurs-Monday @13 for all; Tues-Wed $9)
The other cinema in town is the State Motueka, which is associated with the State Nelson.
