Geoff's Review
An historic cinema (opened February 1935) in an historic town. You can find a full history on the Regent Greymouth website; its life as a cinema, conversion to a factory, and subsequent revival through the efforts of the West Coast Theatre Trust.
These days, it is a thriving cinema serving a town of around 14,000, with a core of loyal patrons and a film programme of mainstream and art house titles.
An attractive cinema to visit and obviously cared for. When the cold wind blows down the Grey River on a sunless day (quite frequent on the West Coast), there is no better place to seek shelter and catch a recent movie.
Like other West Coast towns, Greymouth is increasingly dependent on tourism (e-tourism, in particular) as traditional industries such as coal and gold mining and forestry decline. It is a town worth some time in. Check out Maggie's Kitchen which has been a finalist as the NZ Cafe of the Year on three occasions.
