Geoff's Review
Tucked down a unremarkable little retail lane (the Starlight Arcade) which runs between Horomatangi Street and Tamamutu Street in the CDB of the lakeside tourist town of Taupo, is the Starlight Cinema. It has been in this position for 50 years, even though its contemporary appearance hides what it once used to look like--a cinema occupying nearly an entire block, with one of the largest screens in New Zealand in its heyday.
But it is still a cinema very worth visiting, for its mix of mainstream titles and art house releases across six screens, providing for local audiences and the steady tourist trade. The manager is obviously a film-lover--in September 2011, he had scheduled a month-long screening of the films of David Lean.
The Starlight also features the mnost amazing array of ice crreams in cones (see photo)--a rainbow of colours and flavours.
Also check out the neighbouring cafe The Fern, for good Kiwo tucker and the sweet shop in the arcade.
