Geoff's Review
Another small town cinema waiting to be discovered by unsuspecting travellers. This historic cinema (est 1926), celebrated its 85th birthday in 2011 and is surrounded by memories of the past, as well as actively reviving them.
It is now community owned and operated by a group of trustees who fund raised to maintain and sustain this wonderful facility (upgrading it to DCP and 3D), enabling a a regular programme of week-day and week-end screenings (and more in the school holidays). It is now on the first-release circuit and attracts good audiences of regulars (dominated by an older demographic) to recent releases (both art house and mainstream) and occasional live shows.
It is well worth making a special trip to Opotiki which has some great white sand beaches nearby and a couple of good pub--and especially good fish & chips.
The De Luxe is part of a whole block of buildings devoted to celebrating the history of Opotiki; check out the newly-renovated local museum, with its three stories of toanga.

Temporarily Closed (March 2018), whilst fire safety and earthquake issues are being considered.
