Geoff’s Review
Up until 2013, the Northland town of Dargaville had been without a cinema for over 30 years but a group of local enthusiasts have brought it back. They formed a trust which fund-raised for over two years, to install a state-of-the-art digital facility in the old library space within the rather grand War Memorial Town Hall on Hokianga Road.
Rather appropriately, the cinema is named the ‘Anzac Theatre’, and it opened on July 12, 2013.
There is considerable local support for this venture, both from the Kaipara District Council and the community. The Trust ran fund-raising film screenings at the local Kumara Box (with 8 screenings of ‘Boy’) and they also received ASB funding and other grants.
As well as raising the needed funds, this third attempt to revive local cinema-going in the North has brought the cinema experience once more to the locals.
The reality is that much of the wealth of Auckland was built on the resources of Dargaville (timber, kauri gum) and it is fitting that some of it has flowed back to this small town of 15,000, so they too can share the plesasures of the big screen.
NOTE: I last visited the ANZAC whilst it was in an early stage of development and plan to get back there as soon as possible.
