Geoff's Review
A central city art house cinema, modestly tucked away beneath the Central Library, just off the top end of Queen Street. A little difficult to find if you don't know about it and its survival hasn't been helped by local council actions, such as extended road works which made access difficult in the past. Closest, secure parking would be under the Aotea Centre.
The Academy prides itself on providing quality alternatives to the mainstream fare which dominates Queen Street cinemas; its motto "No multiplex munchers at our place!". It is very much an art house cinema, with an imaginative mix of films and specialist, themed screenings.
Founded by local legend John Hart in 1982, the Academy was a pioneer in bringing art house cinema to central Auckland and it continues to do so, with a strong emphasis on world cinema titles, film festival screenings and a sprinkling of cult titles such as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "The Room").
The foyer has been renovated and rewards the effort of the journey down three flights of stairs.
The Academy is a cinema for cinema lovers but it does place certain demands on its patrons: you need to find a carpark, negotiate your way through night-time rabble of Queen Street, and then walk down stairs. But it is all worth it, especially as it offers some of the best ticket and wine prices of any cinema in Auckland, as well as screening quality films.
