A lovely cinema, sited in a 1927 building of historical significance; a place where the pioneers of the the NZ Labour Party movement once gathered. Just down a side street off Jackson Street, the main street of downtown Petone. This area retains its raffish charm and has not yet fully succumbed to cafe culture which dominates nearby Wellington, with a myriad of locally owned and interesting shops. The Petone foreshore is just a step away.
The Light House provides for an older audience (like other art house-oriented cinemas, it features The Metropolitan Opera seasons) but also a range of family-oriented movies. It certainly seems to connect to its clientele, providing high quality cinema and enthusiastic ushers.
Apparently audience feedback often includes old-fashioned letters!
To add to its two existing sites, the Light House is planning another cinema for 2012 in Wigan Street, just off Cuba Street--quite possibly the most interesting street in central Wellington. Further confirmation that the independent cinema sector is in good health?
