Geoff's Review
The newest art house cinema in Auckland, opened on 15 December 2011. Situated on the ground floor of a rather unremarkable retail/apartment complex close by Howick Village (a pleasant shopping area), the Monterey borrows its name from a grand old cinema which can still seen, in its converted state, on the corner of Picton and Cook Street. Check out the photos on display, and the Monterey website for a fuller history.
The new Monterey provides a good range of arthouse fare for an area of east Auckland which has experienced tremendous growth in recent years (Howick and Pakuranga seem to stretch on forever), and caters for older film-goers, 'Girls Night Out' and family outings. Bargain screenings at $19, Monday-Wednesday.
A welcome addition to the Auckland film scene and another sign that the art house sector remains healthy.
