Geoff's Review
Situated at the north end of the wide main street of this Wairarapa service/farming town, this community owned and operated cinema is yet another retort to those who think that film culture cannot be found in small towns.
Upstairs is the cinema; downstairs the performance space and accommodation for the Repertory Society, which bought the whole building off Kerridge Odeon in 1977, when it was facing an uncertain future.
Upstairs is well-lit,air conditioned, warm and welcoming. Programming primarily provides for a young and older audience, but not much for in-betweeners (aka teenagers). Very reasonable ticket prices too: Adults $13, Children $8 and Concessions $10 (but no EFTPOS available). Screening Thursday to Sunday, with extra sessions during school holidays. Cinema opens 30 minutes before each session.
Built as a Kerridge Theatre in 1940, the Regent Upstairs has a part-time manager Bruce Lea, who is assisted by local volunteers. It was renovated in 2000, with smart flip-up seating and curtaining ex-Regent Manners Mall, Wellington.
