Geoff's Review
Opened in December 2004, to provide a film-going experience for both locals and the stream of daytrippers/tourists who gravitate to this picturesque harbour town. Christchurch people travel over the winding hill to catch films, as it is only 50 minutes travel (and the Hilltop Tavern makes for a great mid-way stop).
There are screenings seven days a week in summer and five days a week in winter, with an emphasis on art house titles--and plenty of French films, as befits the historical origins of this resort town of 700 locals (even though the French connection in Akaroa sometimes seems a little over-baked). The cinema is an important component of a sunny little cafe (which features fresh baking), adjacent to the Akaroa Public Library, and all your cultural needs can be met at the one spot. A bonus is free wireless access.
The cinema went through some uncertain times recently but is now running smoothly under new management.
