Geoff's Review
Squeezed between high hills and the sea, Paekakariki is growing in popularity for its seaside setting and appeal as a day trip from Wellington (as well as rail enthusiasts attracted to the Railway Museum). On any sunny weekend, you can spot visitors sipping their coffee outside the two local cafes whilst perusing real estate brochures.
Finns has been long established as the local pub and has turned some under-used bar space in an appealing 26-seat cinema, which opened in September 2012.
Finns has sourced its films through the Shoreline Cinema in nearby Waikanae but will shortly go it alone, continuing to provide a limited range of art house releases for a wide age range of patrons along the Kapiti Coast. The cinema is a another adjunct to the hospitality attractions of Finns (restaurant/bar/acccommodation, and is a welcome addition to the remarkable clustering of art house cinemas in the Wellington region.
Note: Paekakariki is the setting for the New Zealand feature 'Second-hand Wedding'.
September 2018 update: The Crowthers have retired from running Finns and the entire complex has been advertised for sale. At present, there do not seem to be any screenings happening at the cinema.
